Tulsa Men's Tennis Downed by the No. 9 Southern Cal Trojans 6-1

The eighth-ranked Golden Hurricane fall to 14-3 on the season

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa's men's tennis team lost to the No. 9-ranked Southern California Trojans, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the TU campus. The loss drops TU to 14-3 on the season and 10-3 against ranked opponents, with all three loses coming against teams ranked in the top-10.

The Golden Hurricane's lone singles victory came from senior Alberto Sottocorno at the No. 5 position against Jason McNaughton, 6-2 7-6 (9-7). Senior Will Gray lost in a hotly contest match that went to a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-8), to No. 54 Gary Sacks at the No. 3 position. Arnau Brugues and Victor Kolik also fell to ranked opponents. No. 18 Brugues retired due to injury against No. 7 Robert Farah, 6-2, retire. Kolik fell to No. 46 Kaes Van't Hof, 7-5, 6-3. Ricardo Soriano and Ross Cunningham also tasted defeat for Tulsa. Soriano fell to Jaak Poldma, 6-1, 6-4, while Cunningham was beaten by Abdullah Magdas, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Tulsa put itself in a 1-0 hole after dropping the doubles point. The No. 36-ranked duo of Brugues / Soriano defeated the USC pair of McNaughton / Sacks, 8-6 at the No. 2 position. TU's top pair of Andy Connelly / Cunningham fell to the second-ranked team in the nation of Farah / Van't Hof, 8-3. At the No. 3 position, Kolik / Sottocorno lost to Andrew Piotrowski / Poldma, 8-6, in the match that decided the doubles competition.

 

 

TU will be action again next week as it hosts Conference USA rival Memphis on Thursday, March 27 at 5 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane will also be in action on Saturday, March 27 against Hawai'I at 1 p.m.
